Slowly, Winnie came to and this time the first thing she felt upon waking was frustration. She was lying on a blanket on the soft ground as morning sunlight shone down through another canopy of green trees, the leaves softly rustling in a summer breeze. Once again, she’d been unconscious for hours, and the others must have fled with her and made camp somewhere safer so that they could wait for her to awaken.

This had to stop happening.

Winnie pushed herself up with a groan, rubbing her aching head for a moment… And then she remembered what had been happening when she’d lost control.

“Henry,” she breathed, looking around for the others.

They were there, all three of them; Kygo gave her an anxious look while Balkior tended to a pot on a campfire, and Henry reclined on his own blanket nearby, his hair mussed, his clothes dirty, and his arm suspended in a sling. The boy offered her a worried, sympathetic half-smile, as if trying to act casual. “Good morning, Winnie.”

“What happened?” Winnie asked, biting her lip as she looked over the sling. “How bad is it?”

“Not as bad as it could have been,” Henry said, looking down at his arm with a sigh. “It’s not broken or anything, but Balkior says I ought to have it up like this when we’re not riding so as not to jostle my shoulder. He’s made me a poultice, too.” He reached up with his free hand and pushed aside the edge of his cloak to reveal a soft cloth pouch of herbs bandaged to his shoulder under the torn and blood-stained holes Shercan had ripped into his shirt. “He’s as fine a healer as any mage I’ve ever dealt with—and far less expensive, too.”

How he could crack jokes in their circumstances was beyond Winnie.

She made herself ask the question: “Are we in Destia?”

Balkior sighed sadly. “No. The battle drew out soldiers from the fortress—at least two of shifters were downed, after you—after the life-force magic went out of control. There were still more, though. And while I’m sure your friend did his best to waylay them—we were forced to flee into the woods. We went on as far as we could to make sure we weren’t being chased, which means we had to go quite a long way from the border before we could stop.”

“And now that there’s been an attempted crossing that resulted in a fight, security’s been increased,” Kygo told Winnie. “I went as near the border as I could under cover of the trees and saw it for myself. There’s no way to cross in this region, that much is certain.”

Winnie swallowed down a sudden lump in her throat. They’d been so close! They’d had the seal, they’d walked alongside the rocks, they could have crossed over at any time—but they’d been trying to be careful and had only gotten caught.

“Now what are we supposed to do?” She groaned, still rubbing her forehead. “We don’t have time to wait around for tensions to die down.
